Cult Founder.
Blavatsky was born in the Ukraine. She married young, but soon separated from her husband. With Henry Olcott she founded the Theosophical Society in New York in 1875, having spent many years in Tibet and India. She claimed that she had been taught by Tibetan Grand Masters who had revealed to her the secret knowledge that lies behind all religions. Her main work in which she expounded her doctrines was Isis Unveiled, published in 1877. Theosophy was popular among the middle classes in both the United States and Great Britain in the early twentieth century, and even committed church-goers joined the Society. Blavatsky was signifi- cant in the history of Christianity in that she led many Westerners to an awareness of the Eastern religious traditions. The Society did not set itself up as an alternative religion; its avowed aims were to form a nucleus of universal brotherhood, to encourage the study of comparative religion and to investigate the hidden laws of nature and the latent powers of human beings.
